Testimonials

In over 30 years in the water industry both in the UK and Overseas I have never met anyone more capable both from a technical and personal point of view.

I have worked with Paul in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on a very difficult leakage project for six months in my capacity as General Manager. In the past my company’s performance was criticised by many parties, but through Paul’s personal charisma and perseverance he welded over 100 people of thirteen different nationalities into seamless teams. Using his own initiative and drive, he has trained and developed the staff to become very competent survey, isolation and leakage detection technicians, who can now work under their own steam. The impression of my company is now very positive and all this has been achieved over a three month period.

Paul’s technical experience in the field is exceptional. He is one of those rare beings who can turn his hand to anything. He not only understands how to use the various leak detection devices, he understands how they function and can strip them down and rebuild them. He is very computer literate and is comfortable with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, GIS etc. He has successfully been involved in all aspects of NRW reduction from the survey, design and setting up of DMAs, isolation, step testing, leak detection using many different models of leakage detection equipment, and repair of leaks, large diameter pipes, valves and installation of flow meters and large diameter valves. He is very hands on and earns the respect of his staff by being able to demonstrate that he can do most jobs better than them. The working environment in Riyadh is very difficult and it needs a flexible person, with drive, initiative and the correct attitude to succeed. Paul has done this and I am very confident that if he can succeed here, he will be able to succeed anywhere.

Paul’s previous experience as a self-employed contractor with his own staff gives him an extensive working knowledge of contracts, industrial relations, budgeting, work planning, H&S, financing, taxation, business development and how to succeed in a competitive environment, which gives him an insight into the issues faced by companies that the majority of field staff cannot hope to comprehend.

He has been trained and is certified to train in H&S issues, working in confined spaces and the use of breathing apparatus, chlorine usage and disinfection, working at heights, first aid, and manual handling to name but a few. I have personally watched him give training in both the field and the classroom and he successfully imparts his message by his humour, using the appropriate language for his audience   and keeping his audience involved and interested. In October 2010 Paul and I gave a joint technical paper at the Water Loss Asia Conference in Kuala Lumpur on the difficulties of leak detection in an intermittent supply area, which was well received by all delegates. This was the first time that Paul had presented a paper at such a venue, but as with all things that he does, he approached it in a very professional and mature way and won over our audience through his personality and honesty.

I could say more, but feel the above should be enough to give a picture of the man. This is the first testimonial that I have written with no qualms at all.

I joined Ranhill Arabia as General Manager at a time when project progress was behind schedule, relationships with both clients and partners were at a low and with internal staff issues at a high due to the different contracts and terms issued to the various staff.

Paul Murphy joined me in Ranhill Arabia at the same time, as Leakage and DMA Implementation engineer. Paul was very instrumental in communicating directly with the National Water Company site staff and building up relationships, which initially were non-existent. These relationships proved useful in obtaining permissions and job approvals at later stages.

With staff from 13 different countries it was essential that they worked together harmoniously to ensure smooth operation. Paul integrated himself with all nationalities and helped to build the team into a single working group, rather than several small non-integrated units.

The contract itself was difficult enough without the issues detailed above, with intermittent water supply, unknown pipelines and permissions to dig very difficult to obtain. However Paul and his teams managed to work well despite these and project progress improved considerably with some 146 DMAs established and 46 DMAs below 12 % leakage within 10 months of Paul joining the team

I have known Paul Murphy for over 3 years and for 12 months of that time, Paul was employed by Utilitec Services Ltd as a Project Engineer.

Paul was responsible for a region of United Utilities operating area and within this region he was tasked with installing and maintaining over 1000 remote data loggers (Cello). These flow and pressure loggers are installed on DMA meters, critical monitoring points within a DMA and on numerous large commercial customer sites.

Reliable, accurate data is essential for the client to be able to direct their detection staff to the correct areas, but also provide vital information for a company’s water balance, poor pressure monitoring etc. During Paul’s employment he maintained all of his respective sites within the strict service level agreement as set by the client.

I knew Paul Murphy in previous roles with other water industry contract organisations prior to him joining Utilitec and am aware first hand of his technical and operational ability.
